Programs > The Personal Support Worker Program > Part 1
Part 1 of the PSW program at CALC: In-school courses, Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for 18 weeks
TPA3C — Health and Personal Services Technology, Grade 11, (3 credits)
TPO4C — Gerontology & Child Development- (3 credits)
In TPA3C you will learn about:
• the role of the Personal Support Worker
• professional practices
• safe handling and use of equipment
• safe lifting and transfer of clients
• safety and abuse of clients
• assisting clients with personal hygiene
• assisting clients with activities of daily living
• working with clients who are cognitively impaired
• assisting clients when they take medication
• paliative care
• how to assist the client’s family
In TPO4C you will:
• describe the stages of child development & of older adulthood
• identify needs of children & the elderly at different stages of development
• describe social & recreational activities & programs and the need for such programs
• describe Government Legislation
• examine Career Pathways in geriatric care
You will engage in the following activities:
• create individual reports
• contribute to group work
• participate in student presentations
• listen to guest speakers
• role play situations
• make use of audio and video resource materials
• practice and demonstrate skills in a laboratory setting
You will go on the following field trips:
• Women’s Health Forum
• Visiting a Funeral home
• Multi Level Health Care Facility
• Facility for Children's Rehab
