CanEx Testimonials

Here you can read about just a few of our more recent success stories.

Scotia Bank

      Student — Grant
Grant is a new immigrant to Canada and has been placed with the Scotia Bank for his co-op training. This is the first time since arriving here that he is doing what he has been trained for. CALC has helped him get his career on track. He really wants to give a special thanks to Franki in the co-operative department for making this a reality. Grant describes the CALC CanEx Co-op program as ‘fantastic’ and one that ‘makes dreams into reality’. Many people come to Canada and seek employment but all employers are looking for Canadian experience. How does one get that necessary experience if one doesn’t have the opportunity to get a job first? This is an ongoing cycle. The co-op program was the best way for Grant to get the experience he needed. The job placement allowed him to show his skills instead of just being trained.

As Grant says ‘CALC gives you the chance, but you have to take the opportunity.”

Evron

      Student — Igor
After taking CALC’s CanEx Co-op Program Igor’s has since gotten a great job as a programmer with Evron. It is a job he really loves and mentions that he really likes working for Evron because the people at the office are so friendly and helpful.

Igor stated, “without co-op, I couldn’t be here.” His journey started back home in Uzbekistan when he started to read about co-op on the Internet. When immigrating here in 2002 he spent months trying to get employment but with no luck. Then after checking out the Internet for options he decided to take advantage of CALC’s Co-op Program, enrolling in February 2003. He was hired in June the same year.

The co-op program helped him get the “Canadian Experience” that all employers are looking for. Most new comers just don’t know the local job market or what other possibilities are offered here. CALC was instrumental in helping him find employment while the teachers provide one-on-one advice for him to make the most of getting started in Canada. Igor has been so happy with the CALC CanEx Co-op program that he has recommended it not only to his friends but also to his wife, Olga. She has also now enrolled in the program and working as a software testing at the Government of Ontario Management Services Board. Igor highly recommends the co-op program because the program will help you find employment.

      Employer — Larry Noble
Larry Gold, President of Evron, has many co-op placements from CALC and all have worked out well. Evron's criteria for placements are that people have to be ready to work and CALC students provide that ability. Evron is not a training placement program. The candidates skills are matched with each project. The business is tied to revenues so Evron’s expectation of expertise is at a high level. Larry is very pleased to see co-op students’ language skills improve dramatically over the months as they gain Canadian experience. Larry is already looking forward to the next placement candidates. All of the co-op placements had an understanding on the job expectation. They did not have any false expectations.

Harbourfront Centre

      Student — Nadia
Nadia says the CALC teachers ‘are great’ and they worked hard to get her a co-op placement with the Harbourfront Centre. According to her, the CanEx co-op program is the best place to learn job-finding skills and résumé writing. The placement has taught her a lot of new things and she now feels ‘like a real web developer.’ She has found the staff at Harbourfront supportive, smart and professional. Nadia’s background was accounting, but with the help of CALC’s co-op program she changed it to web development. <

      Student — Joyce
Joyce loves the co-op program that gave her the opportunity to be placed at Harbourfront Centre. When her term was completed, she was offered an extended contract. She originally went to a community college and then found they did not provide any of the support needed for her to find employment. She had some training but no experience. Before the CanEx co-op program at CALC she felt she didn’t know a lot about web development. Since enrolling, the program has given her the confidence to meet the challenges of her new workplace. Joyce highly recommends the program to others.

      Employer — George
George, an IT Manager at Harbourfront Centre, has brought in many co-op placements. Whenever they look for specific positions, CALC provides them with the students they need. George most definitely feels that there is a mutual benefit: the co-op students gain experience, and the Harbourfront Centre achieves their project goals.

Parr & Associates

      Student — Valbona
Valbona, another former student, is now working as an accountant at Parr & Associates where she did her co-op. She says: “Being new to Canada, from Albania, I needed to go through the whole process of job search, résumé preparation, interview techniques and job search skills. The CanEx Co-op program at CALC offered this. I loved the co-op program at CALC because it gave me the skills to land a permanent job.”

      Employer — Daryl Oliver
Daryl Oliver, V.P., C.F.O., of Parr & Associates has brought in many CALC students. He says: “The co-op program is a definite bonus for Parr & Associates. Valbona was able to make a real difference in our office and we hired her. A lot of employers pass over résumés of new Canadians due to language barriers. The co-op program gives the employer and co-op student a way to see what each is all about without a large investment.”

Ms. Miriam’s – Nursery School & Play Centre Ltd.

      Student — Diane
Diane knows CALC CanEx Co-op is a great way to see if a particular job or related job area is for you. She says it is especially good for mature workers and is the ‘best way to find out what fits you’. Diane feels it is better to do co-op before college so you can confirm your expectations. She says ‘co-op was the best thing for me – not knowing for sure if I could handle the children, especially not having kids of my own.’

      Employer — Miriam Misfsud
Miriam Misfsud, the owner, knows that CALC’s CanEx Co-op program allows students to participate in a career, and get that all important ‘hands on experience’. Students have 16 weeks experience in a Canadian nursery school. She feels that the co-op program attracts good people to the profession. It is a win-win situation, the students are a definite help and also the student/employees get a chance to talk and learn about their careers.
