     Business and Computer Studies

Business subjects at CALC are organized to provide career paths for students who wish to develop job skills while completing a high school diploma. All students taking business courses who do not have any typing skills should take Introduction to Business (BBI10) to develop touch typing skills before continuing with either the accounting or the information technology paths.

Students interested in accounting should start with Introduction to Accounting (BAI3E) followed by Accounting for a Small Business (BAN4E). If your future plans include extensive use of computers, or clerical work in an office, then consider Introduction to Information Technology in Business (BTT20) and Information Technology Applications in Business (BTA30). All the courses mentioned are taught using micro-computers and industry standard software for some or all of the course time.

International Business (BBB4M), Law (CLU3M) and Organizational Behaviour (BOH4M) are also useful for students planning to work or to pursue business studies in post-secondary institutions.

     English and ESL

Welcome to the English/ESL program at CALC. Your studies in English/ESL will be very important to your future success at work, college or university. Everything you do depends on your ability to communicate effectively. The English/ESL staff is committed to helping you develop and improve your language skills. Our courses follow the Ministry of Education’s guidelines for the new curriculum courses in English and ESL. We do understand that adult students may have special language needs or language gaps in their education. We will try to address these. Our courses are 9 weeks long, so be prepared for an intensive course.

Before you entered CALC, you were given an English assessment. Your placement in an English course was based on this assessment. The expectations from the new curriculum guide the assessors in the placement. You may feel you have been misplaced, but please be aware that your assessment has shown weaknesses in meeting new curriculum expectations. We understand that adult students are in a hurry to complete their education and move on. Your success will be greater however, if you give yourself the time to develop all the skills you need. Be patient.

     Math, Science and Humanities

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Mathematics, Science and Humanities program at CALC. Through these three disciplines we are able to offer a wide variety of courses at both the intermediate and senior levels under the Ministry of Education guidelines for new curriculum. As a student at CALC you will be able to fully develop your mathematics, science and communications skills under the guidance of an experienced and caring staff. The programs are designed to prepare adult learners to be successful in future employment or as a sound basis for further study at college or university.

All potential students will have been assessed for placement in an appropriate level of mathematics and science (please see the Sample Assessments page). It is important that you consider your options for the future now in order to follow the proper educational pathway best suited to your goals. I encourage all students to use the guidance provided by our Student Services department and focus on the courses which are necessary for the programs you wish to pursue in the years to come.
