News > CALC talent show
One of my greatest joys as a teacher is getting to share my passions with my students. Over the last three months, this is exactly what I got to do.
This year, Farley Flex, a judge on Canadian Idol, introduced the Toronto District School Board Idol project within the board. He, along with Director of Education Chris Spence, was interested in creating something that was more than a simple gimmick for singing. They wanted a program that inspired students to participate in a school activity that would not only get them involved with the arts community, but to allow aspiring artists and business-minded students to have an opportunity to use their creativity and knowledge in a real-world star-making venture.
City Adult Learning Centre held its Idol Competition and Talent Show on March 25, 2010, to a packed auditorium. It was a tremendous success. We had nine extraordinarily talented performers take part, but only one could win. Sarah Bellamy, a new student at CALC this quad, quickly won the hearts of the audience, ensuring her position as CALC Idol.
With our Idol crowned, we’ve assembled an efficient team of students to take on the roles of the Virtual Industry Professionals that make up the remainder of our CALC Idol Team:
CALC Idol: Sarah Bellamy
Manager: Andrew Bryan
I/T: Hedeon Fletcher and Morgan Treadwell
Choreography: Anthony Walker
Image Consulting: Lisa Shivrattan, Andrea Opre, and Talia Rodriguez
Marketing: Andrea Opre and Laura Thompson
Graphic Design: Hedeon Fletcher and Veronica Carter
Social Responsibility: Adyam Yallew
Publicity: Andy Nichol, Veronica Cater, and Morgan Treadwell
From here on out, it’s a battle of the publicity and marketing! Who can create the best plan promote their Idol with the most effectiveness to the rest of the TDSB to capture the most votes! I guess we’ll find out in a few short weeks! Interested in seeing Sarah and the Team compete at the Semi-Finals at Monarch Park on Thursday April 8th? Keep you eyes and ears open for how you can earn/win your ticket!
Sincerely,
Leanne McGuirk
